The Monk

Plot summary:
  • The Capuchin monk Ambrosio is an apparent orphan brought up under the care of his monastic order to become a charismatic preacher idolized by the population of Madrid.
  • At the start, Ambrosio is a model of piety, but he easily succumbs to the temptations of the devil.
  • The devil's chosen instrument is the young monk Rosario, who is a female in disguise and is actually a demon.
  • In the form of his pupil Matilda, she seduces Ambrosio. 
  • Ambrosio then lusts for Antonia, who he rapes and kills. He eventually finds out that she was his sister.
  • Ambrosio is delivered into the hands of the Inquisition but escapes by selling his soul to the devil for deliverance from his death sentence. The devil prevents Ambrosio's final repentance and Ambrosio suffers a prolonged, torturous death.
