  • After Valentine departs, Proteus asks Valentine's servant Speed if he had delivered a letter to Julia. Speed replies yes.
  • In the meantime, Julia asks Lucetta whom she should fall in love with and Lucetta recommends Proteus. Lucetta admits that she has a letter from Proteus. Julia tears up the letter.
  • Antonio decides to send his son, Proteus, to the Duke's court in Milan. Proteus and Julia exchange rings and promise to keep loving each other.
  • Valentine falls in love with the Duke's daughter, Silvia. When Proteus arrives at the duke's court, he falls in love with Silvia too and vows to do anything to win her from Valentine.
  • Valentine confesses to Proteus that he plans to elope with Silvia. Proteus notifies the Duke of their plans, gaining favor for himself and causing Valentine's banishment from court.
  • Julia disguises herself as a man to journey to Milan to be with Proteus, but upon arriving at court she witnesses Proteus and Thurio wooing Silva.
  • Valentine is apprehended by a group of outlaws while traveling to Mantua, who demand him to become their king.
  • Silvia and Julia, disguised as page Sebastian, meet when Julia delivers the ring Proteus had given her to Silvia on behalf of Proteus.
  • Silvia calls on Sir Eglamour to help her escape from her father's oppressive will - he wants her to marry Thurio - and to find Valentine. While traveling through the forest, they are overtaken by a band of outlaws and Eglamour runs away.
  • The Duke, Proteus and Thurio, along with Sebastian//Julia, organize a search party for Silvia.
  • Proteus wrests Silvia away from the outlaws while Valentine watches them unseen. Proteus demands that Silvia give him some sign of her favor for freeing her but she refuses, and he tries to rape her. Valentine jumps out and stops him and Proteus immediately apologizes.
  • Valentine offers to give Proteus Silvia as a token of their friendship, but at that moment Sebastian faints and his true identity becomes clear. Proteus decides he truly loves Julia better than Silvia.
  • The Duke realizes that Thurio is a thug and says that Valentine may marry Silvia. Valentine asks for clemency for the outlaws and suggests a double marriage.
