John Ruskin (1819-1900)

  • created the term "pathetic fallacy" - projection of author's sentiment onto an inanimate object (e.g. "happy sunshine", "gloomy fog")

The Stones of Venice
  • architectural study of Venice in which Ruskin "reads" the economic, social and moral history of Venice through its permanent structures
